When out on the search for a new PC monitor, it’s unlikely you’ll find many that are excellent for under $150.
On a such a low budget, your options are very limited and oftentimes you won’t be able to match the quality of a higher priced monitor.
In today’s ACER R240HY bidx review, we’ll help determine whether or not this monitor is worth your purchase.
ACER R240HY bidx: Specs
First off, the R240HY sports great picture quality for a monitor at this price point.
The 23.8” monitor has a Full HD 1920-by-1080 display resolution in a 16:9 aspect ratio; pretty much the industry standard for a monitor of this size. This is more than enough for most general consumers, and you can expect small text and details to be clearly displayed.
At any size larger, such as in 27” monitors, some people feel that Full HD begins showing its limits. They think that 1080p on such a large display is way too pixelated for them. So, do make sure to consider Quad HD (2560×1440) if you’re looking at bigger monitors.
According to Acer’s website, the R240HY boasts a contrast ratio of 100,000,000:1 with 16.7 million colors supported and a maximum brightness of 250 Nits. Expect your screen to deliver vibrant and beautiful color contrast.
The monitor uses In-Plane Switching (IPS) panel technology, so rest assured you’ll have excellent color accuracy when using this. You can also expect the colors to remain consistent with no change of brightness from any viewing angle or any issues with screen glare.
However, you may notice minimal amounts of backlight bleeding which is a common issue among IPS displays. But it’s highly unlikely that you’ll see this problem unless you have a fully black screen in a dark room. It’s practically not even issue at all.
On the other hand, if you chose to purchase a monitor with a Twisted Nematic (TN) Panel, you’ll get a screen with worse color representation and terrible viewing angles.
The amazing color saturation coupled with the Full HD resolution from the IPS panel create a very satisfying and engaging experience for the customer.
Aside from visual quality, eye protection is another important aspect to consider when choosing a computer monitor. Acer’s monitor comes equipped with flicker-less technology which is designed to reduce annoying flickering that causes eye-straining during long periods of use.
The monitor also comes with a blue light filter option, further making it an easier task on the eyes. And of course, Acer’s Comfyview which decreases screen glare.
The refresh rate and response time of your monitor are especially critical for serious gamers. The R240HY has a standard refresh rate of 60 HZ and a surprisingly quick response time of 4 ms for an IPS panel. These specs are more than enough for most and will definitely cut it for everyday use:
- browsing the web
- streaming movies
- casual gaming
A 4 ms response time is quite low (which is good) for most gamers, and that’s enough to prevent ghosting and other visual artifacts. But if you’re interested in competitive gaming, start looking at TN panel monitors. They have even lower 1 to 2 ms response times (even though they lack color accuracy and wide viewing angles).
And it’s highly unlikely that most consumers would need a refresh rate much higher than 60 HZ. This is enough to provide low amounts of screen tearing and input lag for gamers. Again, if you’re a competitive gamer, it would be wise to start looking at monitors with refresh rates of 120 HZ instead.
It’s important to note that a higher refresh rate and a lower response time applies to really competitive gamers. The 60 HZ and 4 ms you get with the R240HY are perfect for many gamers without the drawback of lower color quality.
Design and Features
The first thing to note when looking at this monitor is its ultra slim bezels. This factor along with it’s low price are definitely Acer’s top selling points. The zero frame design allows users to experience more screen with less distraction for more immersive entertainment. Its narrow bezels also make it awesome for multi monitor setups.
On the back of the device, you’ll find an HDMI port, a DVI port, and a VGA port along with a 3.5 mm headphone jack. Sadly, the monitor lacks speakers, a USB port, and a DisplayPort.
Upon opening the box, you’ll find that the monitor also comes along with a VGA cable. Please just spend the $5 to $10 that it will cost for a MUCH BETTER HDMI cable. Really, only use that thing if it’s a last resort situation.
Along the bottom of the monitor, you’ll find a power button and five function buttons that will allow you to change your settings. In the on-screen display (OSD) menu, you’ll find the standard settings that you can adjust in most monitors:
- color temp
- blue light
The majority of the monitor is made of plastic; something that is expected in lower budget monitors. Only the logo and the stand itself are made of aluminum.
Aside from that, the stand is pretty sturdy and will provide stable support on any flat surface. One of the biggest downsides to this monitor is the fact the stand lacks full adjustability.
You only have 20 degrees of (forwards and backwards) tilt. No height adjustments or pivoting. However, IPS panels have excellent view angles, so you shouldn’t worry too much about this. The monitor also lacks VESA mounting compatibility. So, mounting this thing onto a wall isn’t an option.
Overall, the ACER R240HY bidx is a high quality 24” monitor for a low price. Do realize that you aren’t getting much extras for this price though. The monitor is built mostly of plastic and the stand has very little mobility. It also lacks VESA support. The thing could have also come with DisplayPort and a USB port as well.
However, do also realize that you’re paying for the fantastic functionality of this well designed screen. The thin bezels give you more screen space, so expect to get lost in whatever you do. You’re also getting a Full HD display through an IPS panel, so be certain that you’ll have amazing picture quality.
Again, there isn’t much that could really beat this monitor for it’s price. So if you’re on the search for a monitor that could fit your everyday needs, this is one you should really consider.
